What makes us different?

1. The extra “B”

Wright Woodcraft is registered as a BLLC, or Benefit LLC. Unlike a traditional LLC that’s structured for ownership profits, our mission of social good is built into our founding documents. This distinction presents in three pillars:

Purpose

A BLLC is legally required to create a material, positive impact on society.

Accountability

A BLLC’s directors and managers are required to consider not just owners or shareholders but also the impact on employees, community, and local environment.

Transparency

A BLLC must produce and disclose annual reports detailing its social performance.

2. 100% of annual profits donated to Family land

Make no mistake – Wright Woodcraft operates as a self-sufficient, functional business. As with any business, revenue has to first cover costs: overhead expenses, equipment maintenance and upgrades, loan repayments, and the wages required to recruit and retain our talented craftsmen. We’re striving to create long term growth and sustainable support for Family Land, which means savvy spending and prudent investment. The difference shows up in year-end financials: instead of pocketing yearly profits, Wright Woodcraft’s owner donates 100% of net annual profits straight to Family Land.

3. open books

You read that right! Wright Woodcraft’s mission isn’t just to fund Family Land – we also want to model real-world business practices to program participants. This means that participants (or anyone else!) can openly view our yearly financials. The most overwhelming part of starting your own company often isn’t the technical work or trade skills, but the bigger picture understanding of overhead costs, management responsibilities, taxes, fees, insurance, and all the rest. By lifting the veil on what it takes to run a small business, we hope to not only encourage students to forge their own path, but to give them insight and confidence when evaluating opportunities as future employees. Too many tradesmen fall either into blind trust or bitter ignorance when confronted with phrases like “overhead cost” and “labor burden” – not our program graduates!
